RAF Kinloss in Scotland, home to the Nimrod fleet of long-range maritime patrol, defence and rescue aircraft, is being installed with gravity pipework with an as-built cost of £1.5 million, featuring a specially designed £300,000 stormwater attenuation system to replace existing drainage into Findhorn Bay.
Designed and made by Tubosider UK, the leading manufacturer of steel stormwater attenuation systems, the system is being installed by contractors AMEC for AMEC-Turner under a framework agreement for the MOD. This has a design brief calling for an attenuation main at the airbase capable of retaining 2000 cubic meters (or 2 million liters) of effluent.
AMEC is using the Groundforce Shorco Rolling Strut Double Slide Rail system to install the pipework, which allows 30 meter sections to be laid in six bays all at one time, and completely avoiding any ingress of materials.
“The solution arrived at will now have a combination of large 2.2m diameter tank connecting with a series of 1.2m runs and a four leg manifold at either end, all to accommodate the difficult terrain at Kinloss,” says David Mackenzie Site Manager with Amec.
“The underlying rock means we are having to move water from one area to another, and also allow for the variations in its depth”.
