Formwork - A Guide

Get to grips with the formwork equipment you need for your construction project with this simple guide.

Formwork is an essential component of any construction project, providing either temporary or permanent moulds into which the concrete can be poured. As it is such an important element, it’s vital to ensure you have all the correct equipment in place before the project starts. This guide to formwork products will give you a useful checklist.

Formwork – An Overview

If you’re new to construction or have never used formwork before, then you need to know exactly what it can be used for. These are some of the main uses of formwork on a building site:

Block Foundation: Universal formwork corner panels with or without timber inserts will accommodate any block size. Tie the shutter with 15mm through-ties or support it externally with props.

Strip Footings: Use Frami formwork panels vertically or horizontally.

Double Sided: Using the appropriate number of formwork panels will enable a structure of any height or length to be quickly constructed. Timber inserts can be held in place by adjustable clamps.

Single Sided: Single-sided constructions can be held up using a system of lightweight soldiers and props in combination with a holding down bracket.

Formwork – Props and Struts

Using props and struts as part of your formwork system means you can do away with timber, and have a far more flexible construction when you are simply in need of temporary support. Look for a company offering the best standard props and struts for your formwork applications, ideally with pre-drilled end plates and retaining links on pins to prevent accidental losses.

Formwork – Anchors

Anchors are another vital component of formwork, and can vary from screwbolt styles that are re-useable, through to the express anchor style with a coil, and the uplift bracket that will fit into the bottom of a formwork panel to overcome uplift. The latter can be used with other forms of formwork anchors to complete an easy to use system.

Formwork – Steel Soldiers

Steel soldiers are used in formwork as a support beam to give additional strength. They are versatile components that have a variety of applications.

Formwork – Column Clamps

This formwork component comprises four steel interchangeable arms linked by wedges. Their arrangement allows for simple and accurate adjustment to any size required, and the clamps are re-useable for an unlimited number of uses.

Formwork – Slab Support

Slab support is used as a props system, and comprises steel props and timber beams. Indicators on the beams will enable you to check that the secondary beams are placed correctly. Ideally the timber beams used in this formwork component will have rubber end caps on to reduce damage.
